About your teacher

Composition as a Visual Language

In this workshop, we will:

Explore techniques and methods that other visual storytellers use to communicate non-verbally. We will examine some photography and cinema, and look at how directors think and frame their subjects. Then, translate those in miniatures.

Using that knowledge as a foundation, we will apply it to miniatures and build our scenes, making conscious decisions.

Finally, we will paint the scene and explore how light and volume distribution can also play a significant role in the composition and feel itself.

A workshop specific figure will be provided. The goal will be for the students to have a lot of control on the composition and piece.

Meet your teacher

Before discovering miniature painting, Anastasia worked professionally as a photographer for several years, a background that continues to strongly influence the way she approaches her work today. Her interest in composition, light, atmosphere, and visual storytelling gradually found a new home in miniature painting, where she became fascinated with creating complete images and narratives within a three-dimensional space.

Her work is often dark, atmospheric, and conceptual, using miniatures as a medium to explore emotion and stories. She enjoys experimenting with composition, unconventional presentation, lighting, and mixed media. She is particularly interested in the space between miniature painting and other visual arts.

Her main goal remains to keep experimenting, developing her own visual language, and encouraging other painters to find and develop theirs—understanding the tools and contemplating what they want their work to communicate.
